Big hair is turning into big business as women take on hair extensions to emulate celebrity styles

10 Aug

By Olunife Adeyemi

Women are spending billions of dollars every year to get celebrity look-a-like hair. Last year alone, women spent sixteen billion dollars on hair extensions and restoration products and services. According to packagedfacts.com, a leading website on consumer insights, hair extensions accounted for 80% of the twenty billion dollars women spent in total on hair care products. Six out of ten women wear some type of hair extension.
Local hair stylists and salons that specialize in hair extensions are seeing huge increases in their clientele requesting extensions. Renata Henderson, master hair stylist and owner of Hair Design by Renata, says that most of her clients who request extensions often want to emulate a particular celebrity’s hair style.

“Typically the main hair requests we get as far as celebrities are the Kim Kardashian look, the Beyonce look, sometimes Ciara. Usually the ones that have longer, fuller hair styles.”

May Tavilla has been wearing hair extensions for over twelve years. She admits that she is influenced by the celebrity hair styles she sees in the media.
“You look at Kim Kardashian and she’s got this long, beautiful hair that frames her face and you can’t help but want to have that same type of beauty.”

May spends $300 every three months on hair extensions. She pays $145 for one bag of extensions and she usually needs two bags to create a look for a full head of hair.

Celebrities like Rihanna spend even more on their hair extensions. According to hellobeautiful.com,, Rihanna pays her hair stylist, Ursula Stephen, $22,400 a week to style her luscious locks, which includes the various hair extensions that she wears. That’s one million dollars a year!

Master hair stylist Renata believes that the hair extension business is a growing industry and hopes to capitalize on the trend by offering clients easier access to the hair extensions they need for their various hair styles.

“Now I’m working with a wholesaler to try to actually get hair from them and actually resell the hair to the clients.”

The United States continues to be the largest importer of hair with the UK and China following close behind according to Alibaba.com, the world’s largest online business-to-business trading platform for small businesses. The most sought after types of human hair are remy hair from the heads of women in India, Brazilian hair and “Russian Gold”, hair that comes from blond women living in Russia which has become sort of commodity as it’s getting rarer to find Russian women who will sell their hair.

Fame may only last for fifteen minutes, but it looks like celebrity hair envy is here to stay.

Phoenix Fashion Week presents Shop Garment District

20 May

Hey Beauties! I had one of the best times ever last night at Shop Garment District. Our Fashion Arizona meetup (hosted by Phoenix Fashion Week) was turned into a garment and accessories shopping extravaganza. Our venue was the plush Degree 270 Lounge located in the magnificent Talking Stick Resort. Big thanks to Brian Hill, executive director of Phoenix Fashion Week and the entire team including Christina Ziegler who, working under Brenna Mosses, smoothly ran the operations side of the event and Tanya Cohn who created the fabulous posters we placed on the easels next to the pedestal models.
As Style Team Leader for Phoenix Fashion Week, I put together a team of our best models, hair stylists, makeup artists, and wardrobe stylists who all worked together to make all of the models look absolutely gorgeous. I seriously had the most amazing team last night!! Check out the pics for yourself :)

Don’t miss our next Fashion Arizona and Phoenix Fashion Week event!! xoxo

My Lauren London inspired tresses plus a great mother’s day retreat for free!

5 May

Hey Beauties! Recently, I was inspired to style my tresses as shown in the picture above when I saw the below picture of Lauren London’s locks. I loved the luscious bouncy curls Lauren is rocking in this pic and I was curious to see how my hair would look parted down the middle! I also needed a great look for a super fun event I was doing so I was excited to try it out on my own hair. My hair length is shorter than Lauren’s locks so I took the inspiration and created a look that fits me! Here’s the steps I took to get this look:
- First I parted my hair down the middle.
-Next, I flat- ironed my hair straight.
-Then, I used a 3/4″ barrel curling ironing and curled sections of my hair away from my face to give the swooping and flowing curl look I just loved about Lauren’s hair.
-For slightly looser curls, I ran my fingers ever so slightly through my locks to finish the look.
-Finally, I kept my hair a little bouncy and applied hair spray to lock in the curls.
I think I did pretty well for myself, what you do guys think?

Just for the record, this is ALL my hair lol! I’ve had guys try to do the “finger through my hair test” to feel for tracks lol! Not to say I am above getting some extra length put in my hair while I grow it out…. coming soon! :)

AsK MsBeautyGold: How do I get darker fuller lashes fast?

3 May

Hey Beauties! So I just received a great question about where to post questions to me regarding beauty tips! So I decided to create a forum for beauty tips in the discussion forum of my facebook page. You too can post any and all beauty related questions there and I will answer them! Here’s the link to my facebook forum.
Check out the first question posted by LaToria and my answer below. Don’t forget to like my facebook page. Thanks Beauties!

Question:
Hi [Olunife],

SO! I want a darker, fuller “lash look” what are my options? I need something that’s quick and easy to do. Currently, I use Maybelline’s the Falsies mascara, but I want something that is darker and as I said fuller. What are my options??
- LaToria, Phoenix, AZ

Answer:
Hey LaToria! This is a great question as I am sure many ladies are wondering the same thing. There are several options you have!

Lash tint – although I know your lashes are already a naturally dark color, a lash tint in deepest black or even black/blue would darken your lashes and last up to 2 to 6 weeks. Lash tinting is also really great for women with blond or light lashes! *Lash tinting is normally done by a professional esthetician like myself and takes only 15 mins to apply.

False lashes! – This sounds dramatic, but after putting some false lashes on myself by myself for the first time last week, I realized what a subtle but big difference they do make! My lashes were not only longer but fuller, which gave me the appearance of darker lashes. The trick is not going so over dramatic with the lashes; try a natural set that you can pick up from Sallys Beauty Supply or come to me for a quick lash application tutorial @ BeautyGold Studio!

Mascara – Mascara is definitely the one cosmetic item that can dramatically change the appearance of your lashes the most! Everyone has a favorite mascara and I really believe that you have to test a few to find the one thats perfect for you. I suggest starting at Sephora – their mascara options rival any department store and drug store! But my favorite for creating darker lashes is definitely Dior Show Black Out. It’s ingredients include untra-black kohl pigments sure to darken any set of lashes!

I hope this was helpful! Definitely come back on here and let me know what you decided to do!

xoxo

MsBeautyGold Models for Jill Laine’s Style Segment on FOX 10 News!

26 Apr

Hey Beauties! So yesterday, I had the wonderful opportunity to model for Jill Laine’s style segment on FOX News 10 titled: The Five F’s: Fresh Fabulous Floral Fashions on FOX. Jill styled five models of different sizes, shapes and styles with the central theme of wearing great floral pieces for spring and summer. She graciously asked me to be one of her models and although I am definitely not a model, I more than happily joined the team as I loved what she was doing! There’s a first time for everything! :)

Check out the video from the style segment below. Then, make sure you get your floral pieces for spring and summer in your closet soon!

My RAW Artists Favorites… and what Phoenix Fashion Week was doing there…

15 Apr

Hey Beauties! Last night I had the chance to check out some really amazing local talent at RAW Artists – a local showcase of the valley’s most outstanding painters, photographers, designers, makeup and hair stylists, musicians, spoken word artists and more! The event venue was the eclectic and edgy Hotel San Carlos in downtown Phoenix. I was anticipating this night for two reasons: the musical performance by ShouTheory and the fashion show by Designs by Adaeze. Both did not disappoint. ShouTheory’s smooth groove, harmonious sounds and deep urban beats left me wanting more. Designs by Adaeze fashion show rocked the house with some amazing original and creative pieces. In the house was the Phoenix Fashion Week team including executive director Brian Hill, our operations director Brenna Moses, our in house stylist Jai Anderson and myself of course; the style team leader. We were all there to check out the emerging sounds and fashions. I have a feeling we will be seeing more of Designs by Adaeze!! :)

Don’t miss RAW Artists every third Thursday night in Phoenix, AZ.

Fashion Rocks MIM – IN PHOTOS!

4 Apr

Hey Beauties! Check out the photos from Fashion Rocks MIM that took place on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at The MIM (Musical Instrument Museum) in Phoenix, AZ. The event was packed with V.I.P.s from across the state, fashionistas, and music fans alike. It was such an honor to be apart of this event and work with some of the best stylists in town including Jill Laine, Brian Swan, Shannon Campbell and Jai Anderson. I joined the Phoenix Fashion Week team just recently and I can say that I already see them as family! Brian Hill, Brenna Moses, Justin Lee and everyone else worked together so well to produce a show that will not soon be forgotten. Backstage mayhem was more like backstage calm as our styling team including dressers, hair by Dolce Salon and Spa, and the make-up team hand picked by me worked smoothly and orderly throughout the night. Big thanks to key makeup artist Danielle Forman who managed the makeup schedule to perfection. The models were also so professional and eager to participate and the show turned out phenomenally! I can’t forget the amazing live performance by Nik West and her band including one of my favorites, Phil King!
There was no denying it, FASHION ROCKED THE MIM!!
